I have been doing a link building of our site with specific keyword assigned to me.
We are monitoring the keyword ranking almost every other day while link building is on going. There were time that there are no changes and there are times that ranking change during sunday or early monday monday morning.
If the link you leave in certain website or the page that you put back links has a high PR then it will benefit you within one week. So if you found PR 2 and up pages then you can have the benefits in just 1 week.
However, if you able to leave link to a pages with PR 0 to PR 1, it surely give you benefits on the 2nd week or or 4 weeks. Well that is my observation as I do link building while monitoring my owned keywords.

Yes SEO is a slow process and takes a lot of time the backlinks to be considered.
