Social bookmarking helps you gain traffics because these bookmarking sites have members with similar interest like your sites. It is important the you build your own community in social bookmarking sites so that you and your friends will exchange votes in this bookmarking sites.
What happen with the votes? If you vote your friends digg then the bookmark will more likely to go up in the digg ranking and it will get more notice from the visitors. Sometime we call it i digg yours and you should digg mine.. In technorati, we may call it favorite yours and favorites mines.
